Textile Designer and Artist
Hello, my name is Lucy O Brien, I am a textile designer and artist from Dublin, Ireland.
I have always been interested in art and embroidery and not until I studied at the National College of Art and Design did I find weaving. I left there with a Bachelor (Hons) degree in Textile Surface Design specialising in woven textiles.
Weaving fascinates me and I love every stage of the process, from setting up the loom to weaving the fabric itself.
My textile work is inspired by shapes I find in everyday life and modern architecture. What I see in architecture I then bring into my work. The contrast between a clean surface and areas of intricate detail with linear qualities.
I am interested in sustainability and ethics therefore I only use plant based materials within my work. The traditional aspect of weaving has always interested me. Our ancestors made fabrics to last. If something got a hole, they mended it, they didn't bin it. We need to learn from them and bring these practises back into our own lives.
Today our world is full of cheap products and fashion items that are not made with durable materials. I want people to cherish and keep my designs forever, therefore helping us all towards a more sustainable future!
